Items not on the packing list that you
should consider bringing (per CDT Heimann):
- At least a package of pens and a package of mechanical pencils
- Toothpaste w/screw cap (so it doesn’t open in
your pack)
- Deodorant (eeeh you’ll stink anyway)
- Razors (bring an electric regardless and a strait razor just in
case)
- Small shaving cream
- Chapstick
- Disposable camera
- Extra flashlight /batteries
- Painkillers –Ibuprofen is a must
- Fingernail clippers
- 100mph tape is a big big help you can get this at clothing sales
or order it on the internet
- Lotion
- Thermal underwear tops/bottoms – I wore polypro every day
in the field
- Warm glove inserts – you can get nomex gloves from clothing
sales
- Alcohol pen – I didn’t use this
- Protractor – stick a few in your Kevlar
- Phone card – don’t forget I hate phone card moochers,
and hey no cell phones, unless you can hide them well. (I didn’t
say that)
- Address list
- Stamps
- Paper – bring a big notebook too
- Envelopes – or you can just write on the back of MRE boxes
and stick a stamp on them like I did
- Poison ivy cream – I get poison ivy really bad, but didn’t
see any out there
- Travel shampoo - if you like washing your hair
- Soap
- Foot powder – a must for several reasons
- Moleskin – I even used this – first time – you
need medical tape too, and scissors to cut it
- Eye drops
- Kneepads – definitely if you have crappy knees get some
soft knew pads not like rollerblade pads like volleyball pads, and
wrap
100 mph tape around them.
- Baby wipes – I didn’t use these I just saved them
from the MREs
- Bug spray – ehh if you need it bugs are worse late in the
summer
- Anti-itch cream – yeah you might need this for something
- Index cards
- Markers – a big sharpie you will use it bring 2 b/c you
will also lose it.
- Laminating sheets – you can get small photo laminating sheets
you might find them useful
- Bungee cords. If you get them they have to be black or they will
get confiscated like my yellow and orange ones.
- Whistle – for STX
- Band aids
- Large plastic bags – definite. Wrap zip locks w/100mph tape
and they will work awesome.
- Insoles
- Orders X 8,9 – make sure you have several copies
- 9 Line Medivac Card – this is a MUST HAVE if you want to
look high speed. Use the Abbreviation and look even better.
- Shot record
- 2 sets of glasses
- Prescription
- Terrain model kit.
- Rank if going to CTLT
- PT hat – I wore this in the field under my helmet
- Cammo – bring the compacts they only have sticks at camp,
and those suck
- Lighter
- Yellow cards
- Book/bible
- Knife/leatherman
- Kevlar doughnut – that miles gear is heavy
- Mosquito net – I never used mine
- Gore-Tex socks – oh these were a joy if you hate having
cold/wet feat, buy some online today or pay 50 for them at the Ft.

- Small zip locks
- Laundry detergent – get the individual packs you can sell
these things.
- Hangers – a must have
- Extra uniforms – the more you have the less laundry you have
to do, the more free time you have.
- Extra socks – I think I had 20 pair
- Cadence pages – you really need to know marching cadences,
if you want to distinguish yourself you need to get out and sing
in that
first week or so.
- Riggers belt – helps when carrying the ruck to remove those
belt cuts in your side.
- Tacsop – You may want to laminate this but I almost never
used mine.
- 2 key locks – put the key on your dog tags. I’d take
two pair of those if you can.
